Anchorage has a climate similar to that of the Rocky Mountain States with an average annual precipitation of 15.9 inches and winter snowfalls averaging 70 inches. Snow covers the ground roughly from October to April. Southeastern shares the same latitude with Scotland, Denmark, and southern Sweden. Skagway and Stockholm share the same latitude; and the latitude of Ketchikan is just slightly south of Copenhagen’s. Southeastern summers are warm with an occasional heat wave in the 80s and averages of 60˚F. January temperatures range between 20˚ and 40˚. Southeastern is a rain forest with precipitation ranging between 80 and 200 inches. Temperature extremes in the Interior range between -70˚F in the winter and 80˚ in the summer. The record high in Fairbanks was 99˚F in July 1919. The farther north one goes, the longer the summer “white nights” and winter dark periods become. There is no sunset between May 10 and August 2, and no sunrise between November 18 and January 24 there. Rural Alaska is sparsely settled, yet claims are not infrequent. Access, both limited and expensive, requires a combination of transportation methods: commercial and charter air carrier, snowmobile, tundra vehicle, and even dog sled. Frozen rivers may be used as highways for reaching remote destinations, and road access is nonexistent in Southeastern, home of our capital city, Juneau.
